By ancient tradition common to all monastic communities, both male and female both female, in the Monastery, in addition to the activities of embroidery, pyrography, creation of illuminated manuscripts, there has always been an apothecary where medicinal liqueurs, lactovari (medicated compounds with honey and sugar) and other specific preparations based on "simple " that is, medicinal herbs grown in the Monastery garden or wild herbs collected in the woods. These medicines were intended both for internal use in the Monastery as well as for sale to the public.
The practice of apothecary in monasteries of both sexes was in fact of ancient date and universally widespread and that of "Speziala" or of "Aromataria" was a task regularly present in female monasteries.
The rediscovery of the preparations of the ancient apothecary of the Monastery of Santa Maria della Neve and San Domenico originates from this centuries-old tradition, both in the cosmetic field , both healthy and which the Dominican nuns propose again today.
