Products of the Camaldolese monastery of Fonte Avellana

The monastery of Fonte Avellana is situated on the slopes of Mount Catria and dates back to the 10th century, around 980. The spirituality of these hermits was influenced by St. Romuald of Ravenna, father of the Camaldolese Benedictine Congregation. Since ancient times medicinal plants were cultivated here, under the direction of the monachus infirmarius, a monk with specific health functions, who, on the basis of information learned from books and experience, was in charge of curing the sick, monks or pilgrims. The production is therefore still focused on herbs and natural remedies.
