The Augustinian Order, or even the Order of St. Augustine or of the hermits of St. Augustine, dates back to 1244 from the union of the fraternities of hermits of Tuscia. In 1256 other congregations joined but it was only in 1968 that the change of the title of the institute from hermits of St. Augustine to the Order of St. Augustine was approved. The Augustinian Order is composed of four grades: the friars who constitute the first grade, the contemplative nuns, the regular and secular third orders and the belted, who make up the fourth order. The latter live imitating Augustine and were founded in 1439.
