Cough Syrups

The monks' syrups are balsamic syrups, based on herbs known since ancient times for their therapeutic properties.

The wisdom and experience of the monastic workshops, strong of a centuries-old tradition, always offer us products that are naturally effective because they are prepared with medicinal herbs with marked phytotherapeutic properties.

For this reason, every time the cough assails us or our voice suffers sudden drops due to colds, or prolonged use of the same, we can confidently turn to the natural cough remedies produced by the friars and nuns.

From the Convent of Mount Carmel in Loano, passing through the Monastery of the Benedictine nuns of Orte and the monks of the Ancient Pharmacy of Camaldoli, every community offers us natural syrups, against cough and hoarseness, which calm the excesses and are a valid remedy for the loss of voice.

The monks' syrups are balsamic syrups, based on herbs known since ancient times for their therapeutic properties.

In the natural remedies for coughs, pine buds, that is, sprouts of Scots Pine, cannot be missing. They are harvested throughout the month of May and sometimes in June, and are very useful to treat respiratory tract affected by fever, colds and bronchitis, to calm coughs and as an expectorant to free the lungs from mucus and phlegm.

Eucalyptus is often used as a base for cough syrups, since the active ingredients contained in its leaves, which are dried and preserved, have fluidifying properties at bronchial level, and allow to eliminate phlegm and mucus resulting from febrile states, and asthma.

Mint, known since ancient times and used by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, enriches herb syrups and balsamic candies, for its particular refreshing taste and for its innate property of soothing sore throats and hoarseness.

Anise is also an essential component in monks' syrups, because the essential oil obtained from it is one of the major ingredients in phytotherapeutic medicines used to quell coughs. Its sweet taste with a slight aftertaste of mint gives the cough syrups containing it a pleasant taste on the palate.

The Plantain has astringent properties and since ancient times it was used for the treatment of respiratory diseases, therefore very often it enriches the herbal syrups of the herbal laboratories of monasteries.

Thyme is a natural anti-inflammatory, usually used in syrups and decoctions, is an excellent remedy against cough, asthma, bronchitis and colds as it has strong balsamic and fluidifying properties, and allows the expectoration of excess mucus and phlegm present in the respiratory tract. It also has a disinfecting action on the oral cavity and mucous membranes.

If the problem, on the other hand, turns out to be the voice, subject to aphonia and dysphonia, i.e. lowering or momentary loss of voice, due to laryngitis, pharyngitis or tracheitis, or prolonged use of the voice, Erismus is the herb for us. The Erism, known since ancient times as the "herb of the singers" and which in Greek means "I save the singing", is the essential ingredient of syrups for the voice. Its well known anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties make the syrups particularly effective in case of inflammation of the throat, pharynx, larynx and vocal cords, as it has a fluidifying and expectorant action of mucus and phlegm. It is a natural remedy against dry and oily cough, it soothes inflamed or dry throat of smokers, actors and all those who use their voice a lot for work.

Another natural component finds its place in cough syrups and that is myrtle also called Mortella. Myrtle is an aromatic plant whose berries produce an essential oil to which are attributed balsamic, astringent, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, which make it an excellent ally against respiratory and digestive disorders.

Pine, in all its varieties, represents another valid help that Mother Nature offers us, for the variety of substances that can be obtained from its single parts. In addition to the already mentioned Pine buds, useful against colds, from pine needles it is possible to extract an essential oil with marked balsamic, secretolytic and antiseptic properties, used in the treatment of colds, fever, coughs and bronchitis.

Grindelia, with its colorful yellow flowers, and Drosera, are herbs that have disinfectant, mucolytic and spasmolytic properties that intervene in the smooth bronchial muscles, and for this reason they often make up cough syrups, as they are useful as natural sedatives and calm the spasms related to it, as well as having beneficial effects in case of colds.

The Myrrh, mentioned and known since the biblical times, is an aromatic rubber resin, extracted from the trees or shrubs of the genus of the Commiphora of the family of the Burseraceae; utilized in the pharmaceutical products for its disinfectant properties, therefore it is useful in the throat syrups. It is a powerful analgesic that immediately relieves pain and discomfort of the oral cavity.

Having good allies to treat colds is important, but we must not forget prevention. An unexpected cold day, a sudden drop in temperature, can bring us nasty surprises. For this reason, never underestimate the very first symptoms of sore throat, hoarseness, the first sneezes and tingling because they could be the spy of the onset of colds and bronchitis.

Once again, however, we can draw on our faithful allies, the syrups of the monks who, already at the onset of the first ailments, are promptly effective.
